The World is Flat (In Design)

Flat Design Trend

In the design world, detailed illustrations and flashy animations have become a thing of the past, along with realistic-looking 3D effects such as textures and shadows. These have given way to the flat design trend, which opposes the showy design techniques of the past in favor of a more simplified, classically digital aesthetic. This user-centric design style features open space, crisp edges, bright colors, and two-dimensional illustrations—reverting back to the basics of design as a functional tool and focusing on the bare essentials. The trend has been seen in everything from logos to web and UI design, as of late.

Keep it Clutter-Free

With prominent brands such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo converting to flat design, the trend has already made a huge impact, and it’s here to stay for the foreseeable future. Because of its emphasis on minimalism and simplicity, the aesthetic is a clean and definitively uncluttered look that is more mobile-friendly than any other design approach. In flat design, ornamental elements are considered unnecessary clutter – if a design aspect serves no functional purpose, it’s a distraction from the main message or user experience.

Minimalist ≠ Boring

However, minimalist doesn’t mean boring. In flat design, simplicity is created through meticulous attention to detail while vivid, contrasting colors make graphics pop, grab attention, and guide the viewer’s eye. While trends don’t last forever, it’s safe to say that flat design still has a long way to go.
