Naval Academy Commissioning Week 2021
It’s time for Naval Academy Commissioning Week again in Annapolis!
Beginning Friday, May 21, commissioning events return for an entire week, featuring daily activities leading up to the commencement ceremony at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium on Friday, May 28. Most activities this week, including a speech by the Vice President and the traditional tossing of midshipmen’s covers, are only open to dignitaries, graduating midshipmen, and their guests. However, there are plenty of other events that the public can still participate in. You can view the full 2021 Commissioning Week Schedule of Events here.
One of our favorite parts of the week is the Blue Angels Flight Demonstrations, 55-minute air shows performed by the Navy’s Flight Demonstration Squadron made up of a team of six Navy F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet fighter jets. These demonstrations are some of the first for this group of fighter jets, which recently replaced the legacy F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets used in shows for the past 34 years. This year also marks the 75th birthday of the Blue Angels, making them the second oldest formal aerobatic team in the world.
The flyovers can be seen during the following dates and times:
- Tuesday, May 25: over the Severn River, 2 pm (flight rehearsal)
- Wednesday, May 26: over the Severn River, 2 pm (flight demonstration)
- Friday, May 28: over the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, 10:00 am (graduation flyover)
Flight demonstrations are open to the general public, except for the graduation day event. You can watch the flight demonstration on the Naval Academy grounds by heading onto Ingram Field, certain sections of Farragut Field, and Hospital Point. Other local viewing spots include Jonas Green Park, the area surrounding the World War II Memorial, and areas along the waterfront throughout Annapolis and Eastport.
It’s important to note that traffic will be affected during these times. The Route 450 bridge over the Severn River will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians on Tuesday and Wednesday during the Blue Angels flight demonstrations. In addition, expect traffic on Route 50, Roscoe Rowe Blvd., King George St., Annapolis St., and Taylor Ave.
