Congratulations Naval Academy Class of 2020
After canceling commissioning week activities, the United States Naval Academy made the decision to pursue a virtual graduation ceremony.
The virtual ceremony will happen on May 22, according to academy spokeswoman Cmdr. Alana Garas. The video, which Garas said will have recorded and live segments, will be available on Watchstadium and through options via television streaming services. An archived video will also be available after the initial broadcast.
Secretary of Defense Mark T. Esper will give a pre-recorded keynote address to the Naval Academy’s Class of 2020 during this first-ever, virtual graduation and commissioning for the institution.
In order to comply with current health and safety requirements in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the swearing-in events are closed to all guests, including parents, family members, media and members of the public. The event will begin at 2:30 p.m. with a tribute to the Class of 2020, and the ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. EDT.
